Sector “Nonstationary stars”

Head: Dr. K. Panov Nonstationary processes are being investigated in late-type stars, which are related to chromospheric activity, photospheric spots and long-term cyclic activity variations (stellar cycles). The processes in circumstellar matter are studied in close binary systems. A database is developed for wide-field astronomical photographic observations.

Sector “Stellar atmospheres and envelopes”

Head: Dr. N. Tomov The physical processes in stellar atmospheres and circumstellar matter are investigated. Several types of stars are the object of the research, especially hot super giants of great mass loss rate and close binary systems with a compact component (symbiotic stars, symbiotic novae, X-ray sources).

Sector “Stellar clusters”

Head: Dr. A. Antov Evolutionary status of the stars in old open clusters and the stars in the cores of some globular clusters are being investigated. Light curves of variable stars in globular clusters and regions of star formation are also subject of the study in this sector as well as structure and true shape […]

Sector “Galaxies”

Head: Dr. G. Petrov Physical processes in galaxies and systems of galaxies are investigated. Structures of galaxies and clusters of galaxies are searched. Some catalogs of the most massive structures are compiled and the large scale distribution in the Universe is studied.

Sector “Sun”

Head: Dr. P. Duchlev Nonstationary processes in the solar atmosphere leading to generation of active phenomena are studied. The sector takes part in the Joint Organisation for Solar Observations (JOSO) and in the SOHO programmes for coordinated ground-based and orbital observations of the Sun. Solar physics in Bulgaria is a young field of Bulgarian science. […]

Sector “Solar system”

Head: Dr. V. Ivanova Dynamical evolution of the small bodies in the Solar system, physico-chemical processes in comets, solar ultraviolet radiation and stratospheric ozone are investigated. Photometric observations of asteroids and planets’ satelites are carried out.
